Inspect tagged structure
Section titled “Inspect tagged structure”Open Inspector → Structure. For the current page, Orifold shows the nested tagged reading-order tree, roles, titles where present, and a warning for image-like elements without alt text. A total count of images missing alt text is shown up front, so you don’t have to expand the tree to find out whether there’s a problem.
This view is read-only. It can reveal that a file is untagged or has missing alt text, but this release cannot author or repair PDF structure.
Check archival-readiness signals
Section titled “Check archival-readiness signals”Choose More → Archival readiness. Orifold checks the active document for six signals:
- no encryption;
- no active content such as JavaScript or automatic actions;
- embedded fonts;
- an output intent;
- XMP metadata;
- tagged structure.
Each signal that fails comes with a hint on how to remedy it — and when Orifold can’t remedy it, the panel says so plainly instead of leaving you to guess. Tagged structure, output intent, embedded fonts, and XMP metadata all fall into that second group: they have to come from the application that produced the PDF, not from Orifold.
Worth knowing if you use both: Sanitize also strips XMP metadata, so a sanitized copy won’t carry that signal.
This checklist is guidance, not PDF/A validation, certification, or conversion. A green signal only means that one inexpensive check looked favorable; use a dedicated standards validator for archival acceptance.
